Grace XC Makes History at TAPPS 5A State Championships

November 3, 2025 – The Grace Community Cross Country team traveled to Waco last week to compete in the TAPPS 5A State Cross Country Championships, and what unfolded was nothing short of extraordinary. In a season marked by growth, perseverance, and faith, the Grace athletes continued the legacy of excellence established by past teams while also breaking new ground that had not been reached in decades. Throughout the season, the team was blessed with health, unity, and the opportunity to worship through their effort and attitude.

Boys Make History with Best Finish in 25 Years

The boys team, led by seniors Roe Gaddis, Clayton Bock, and Wyatt Grimes, delivered a historic sixth-place team finish – the highest for Grace since 1998. Competing on a long and rugged course that demanded patience and toughness, the boys rose to the challenge. They were joined by juniors Chris Alexander and Ayden Serrato, sophomore Clive Johnson, and freshman Asher Wickliffe, each playing a critical role in the team’s success.

This season also marked the first time in recent memory that Grace was able to bring its entire boys team to the State Championships, an achievement previously hindered by limited roster size. That complete team presence made a meaningful difference, as teammates offered encouragement and energy on and off the course. Roe Gaddis led the team with an eleventh-place individual finish, capping off a remarkable senior season.

Girls Earn Fifth Straight Podium Finish and Crown Another State Champion

On the girls’ side, Grace continued its tradition of excellence and composure when it mattered most. Competing on a fast course with favorable terrain, the Lady Cougars capitalized on every hill and turn, remaining focused and steady. They entered the meet with hopes of a podium finish and succeeded, placing second overall by just one point in a thrilling team battle. Final scores were 95 (first), 96 (Grace), and 99 (third), underscoring the competitiveness of the race.

For the fifth consecutive year, Grace’s girls finished among the top three teams in TAPPS 5A, maintaining a legacy of consistency and championship-caliber running. The highlight of the day came from Emma Goetz, who captured the TAPPS 5A Individual State Championship – her second career cross country title –while also recording the fastest time of the day across all divisions (1A–6A). Her younger sister, Casey Goetz, followed closely behind, placing fifth overall. Addison Mathews finished sixteenth, Aragon Tanner ran a season-best for thirty-fifth, and MJ Hanson rounded out the scoring five in fiftieth place. Also competing were Rebecca Dai and Cora Castle, both dual-sport athletes who represented Grace with strength and determination.

Competing for the Audience of One

Leading into the championship meet, the coaching staff reminded the athletes that they are not defined by times or placements. Their worth is not determined by numbers on a results sheet but by the truth that they are fully known and loved by God. With faith – even faith the size of a mustard seed – God can accomplish more than anyone could ask or imagine. In Waco, the Grace teams lived out that truth. They competed with courage, carried themselves with humility, and demonstrated that Grace Community runs for the Audience of One.

Looking Ahead and Giving Thanks

While the season has ended for some athletes, others will continue to train for a chance to compete on November 24 at the Nike South Regional Cross Country Meet. This event offers an opportunity to qualify for Nike Cross Nationals on December 6, one of the most prestigious high school cross country competitions in the nation. For those not pursuing that path, this time of year brings a season of rest, reflection, and an opportunity to support other Grace athletic teams in their pursuit of honoring God through sport.

No matter what lies ahead, the Grace Community Cross Country program extends heartfelt gratitude to the families, supporters, and fans who have faithfully encouraged the athletes throughout the season. Their prayers, enthusiasm, and presence have fueled the perseverance, joy, and spiritual growth that define the heart of Grace athletics.
