Lady Cougars Win Blooming Grove Tournament

The Lady Cougars defeated Quitman in triple overtime Tuesday night. After a slow first half, the Cougars pulled even at the end of the third quarter at 33-33. The Cougars were up three, before the Bulldogs hit a three pointer at the buzzer to force overtime. After three overtimes that went back and forth the Cougars came out on top with a 68-65 victory. Paige Gilmore led the Cougars with 25 points including 7 in the overtime periods. Abigail Roach scored 16, Brena Hill had 15. Rounding out the scoring was Kalynn Giffin 3, Olivia Clark 3, Ashley Brown 2, and Reece Porter 4.

Over the weekend the Cougars won the Blooming Grove tournament. Thursday’s game resulted in a 45-32 Cougar win. Brenna Hill led the team with 14 points, Paige Gilmore had 9 points and 7 steals. Abigail Roach had 11 points, six other Cougars scored. Friday the Cougars defeated a tough Keene team. The Cougars jumped out to a15-8 first quarter lead, and after playing even the next two quarters, the girls closed out the game holding Keene to 3 points in the final frame, for a 36-25 victory. Gilmore and Roach scored 10 apiece, while Brenna Hill added 7. Macie Mathis, Reece Porter, and Lucy Loftis all had buckets in the wiin. Game three featured a blowout win over Kerens. The Cougars were up 44-12 at half and never looked back, cruising to a 61-33 victory 10 players scored, led by Paige Gilmore with 19, Brenna Hill 10, Abigail Roach 8, and Lucy Loftis 7. In the championship game Saturday the Cougars defeated the host school Blooming Grove 51-39. The Cougars jumped out early to a 9-0 lead, and forced the much bigger Lions out of their zone. Paige Gilmore, Reece Porter, Brenna Hill, and Abigail Roach all scored in double figures in the win.

On a side note, the seniors narrowly defeated the juniors in the team bowling contest. Olivia Clark’s 139 was the top score.

The Cougars are 12-2 on the season. They play at Big Sandy Tuesday night before competing in the Frankston tournament this weekend.
