Basketball at Dallas Shelton Invitational

Cougars Basketball had a busy and productive week. The varsity lost a close game to Pine Tree on Tuesday by the score of 60-65. Daniel Shankle led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points. Peyton Kelly, Doak Porter, Wilson Smith, and Caden Swaim had 8 points each. The Cougars overcame a double figure deficit in the final period to close the game to 3 withless than a minute to go but could complete thecomeback.  

Over the weekend, the Cougars participated in the Dallas Shelton Invitational. Our opening game was against Diamond Hills Jarvis, a UIL 5A school from Fort Worth. The Cougars jumped out to a 30-14 lead after the first quarter and coasted to a 74-48 win. Scoring double figures for GCS was Kelly, Shankle, Smith, and Swaim. On Friday, the Cougars lost a hard fought contest with an undefeated Dallas Samuell team 60-65. Kelly and Smith led another balanced scoring attack. The Cougars received contributions from seniors Andrew Dancy, Brinton Loftis, and Ethan Roach to almost pull off the upset. In the 3rd place game on Saturday, the Cougars overcame a slow start to play some of our best basketball of the season in a 90 – 42 victory over Mercy Culture. Caden Swaim scored 20 points inthe first half and 26 overall to help the GCS secure the 3rd place trophy. Swaim was selected to the All Tournament team for his performance over theweekend! The Cougars forced MC into 38 turnovers and had four players in double figures for the game. Jack Crawford, Dustin Dossey, Hank Gilmore, and McCade Stinson all played meaningful minutes and made major contributions over the weekend.  

Our JV Blue and JV White teams lost hard fought games to PineTree on Tuesday and competed in the Tatum Tournaments this weekend. The JV Blue secured wins over Tatum and Arp and the JV White defeated Arp in the tournament.  

All our high school teams will be back in action on Tuesday as we host the Tyler HEAT at Taylor Gym. JV White will play at 5:00, JV Blue at 6:15 and thevarsity will tip-off at 7:30. The varsity will play in the Frankston Tournament this weekend. We invite all Cougar fans to come out and support GCS Basketball on Tuesday!
