Cougars Open District Play

Our Cougars opened district play with an impressive 81-60 win over Brighter Horizons. GCS got off to a fast start with a 25-point first quarter and 46-point first half. Five players scored in double figures for the Cougars led by Peyton Kelly’s 18, Daniel Shankle 14, Doak Porter 13, Caden Swaim 12, and Wilson Smith 12 points and 9 rebounds. Senior point guard, Ethan Roach, helped dictate the tempo and ended the game with 4 assists. Brinton Loftis and Jack Crawford also played key roles in the big win. The varsity’s win made it an opening night sweep for our Cougars! The JV Blue team imposed its will on Brighter Horizons and won big to open their district season 1-0.

Earlier in the week, the Cougars swept White Oak in their final pre-district contest. The JV White and JV Blue teams did a great job of pressuring White Oak into mistakes and capitalizing on their turnovers to secure double-digit wins. Dayne Edens, Roe Gaddis, and Vance Fory helped lead our JV Blue in their victory. For the JV White Jay Pillsbury, Aaron Vidrine, and Christian Henry played key roles for the Cougars. In the varsity game, the Cougars got off to a fast start and played well down the stretch to secure a 78-54 victory over the Roughnecks. Shankle 14, Kelly 13, Porter 11, and Smith 10 led the Cougars in scoring while Brinton Loftis, Ethan Roach, and Caden Swain led the team in assists.

The Cougars will travel to state-ranked LaPoynor on Tuesday for a non-district game. JV White will tip-off at 5:00, JV Blue at 6:15, and varsity at 7:30. After Christmas, the Cougars will participate in the Wagstaff Classic at Tyler Junior College on December 27-29. TheCougars will play Brownsboro on Wednesday at 1:30, Cumberland Academy at 12:15 on Thursday, and Bishop Gorman at 2:45 on Friday. We hope all Cougar fans will come out and support the team during the holidays.
