High School Girls Soccer – HEADED TO STATE!!
What a week it was for the Girls Soccer Program! They are Area and Regional Champs, and will be heading to the Final Four on Tuesday in Round Rock!
On Wednesday, they hosted Austin St. Michael’s for a rematch of last year’s Area Playoff Game. This year’s installment was another hard-fought and exciting game. The Lady Cougars started strong and created some chances but were unable to find a breakthrough. St. Michael’s was the first to score on a long shot just before halftime. St. Michael’s doubled the lead soon after the start of the second half, and the Lady Cougars were facing a difficult task and knew it was going to take a lot of work to climb back. And that is exactly what they did! Addison Eli scored soon after on a cross from Maggie Gillen to make the score 2-1. Addison Eli again found the back of the net after a clever bit of play from Cesa Sabillon created the chance. Now that the Lady Cougars were back level at 2-2, they kept pushing and pressing for the winner. And they found it courtesy of Elle Durham! After taking the ball from the St. Michael’s defender, Durham carried the ball downfield, fighting off three defenders, before cutting back inside and hitting a strong left-footed shot to the top corner. The Lady Cougars held on from there, with Claire Stoermer making several key saves, for the dramatic come-from-behind victory!
Grace then advanced to the Regional Playoffs against Ft. Worth Christian. This time, the Lady Cougars were able to dominate the contest all over the field. They peppered the Cardinal goal with shots and shut down every attack they tried to mount. In the end, Grace strolled to a 4-0 win. Scoring for the Lady Cougars were Elle Durham (2), Cesa Sabillon, and Grace Carter. The defense, made up of Claire Stoermer, Kennedy Tilley, Maggie Gillen, Julia Feliciano, Keely Bozeman, Bela Sabillon, Paige Britt and Randi Huddleston, kept yet another clean sheet and provided such a solid foundation off of which the offense could build.
The Lady Cougars advance to the Final Four to face off against Austin Regents. Kickoff is set for Tuesday morning at 10:00am. A win in that game would take them to the State Championship on Wednesday morning at 9:30am.
