Cougars Travele to Houston Tournament

Last week, the Cougars traveled to Houston to compete in the Lutheran South tournament. They earned 3 ties and one win to place 5th place in the tournament. These were the results:

Fri 12/8 Sat 12/9

v. Woodlands 1-1 tie v. Cypress Christian 1-1 tie

v. TMI 0-0 tie v. Boerne 2-1 win

In the first game on Friday 12/8, the boys played against the Woodlands, and the game ended in a tie as it got canceled due to the 2nd lightning delay. Senior forward Carter Eli scored the only goal of the first game and he was assisted by junior midfielder Matthew Hunsinger. Notable performances went to senior defender Jacob Carpenter and junior midfielder Carter Eitel. Junior goalkeeper Jake Jones recorded 5 saves in the shortened game.

In the second game on the same day, the Cougars squared off against powerhouse TMI. This was the first time that Grace held TMI to a scoreless draw in the 4 times that they have played. Notable performances went to senior forward Daniel Kucheruk, junior midfielder Logan Trump, and freshman defender Andrew Gardner. A special notable performance went to Jake Jones as he kept the shutout with 3 big key saves and recorded 12 saves.

On early Saturday 12/9, the team competed against Cypress Christian, and the game ended in another 1-1 draw. The lone goal was scored by junior defender Andres Casillas and he was assisted off a corner by senior defender Cole Edens. Notable performances went to junior midfielder Calvin Pierce and sophomore defender Maguire O’Briant. Jake Jones earned 9 saves.

Due to the 3rd game results, the team was placed in the 5th/6th place consolation game versus Boerne. The Cougars won 2-1. Goals were scored by Daniel Kucheruk and freshman forward Josiah King. Assists went to Andrew Gardner and Daniel Kucheruk. Jake Jones recorded 8 saves in the game. Notable performances went to the new coaching staff including goalkeeper coach Kyle Miller, assistant coach Celso Castro, and volunteer coach Aldo Jimenez. They were tasked to lead the team in implementing the lineup, the tactical approach to the game, and substitution patterns to earn a win.

The Cougars’ non-district record is now at 5-0-5 (0-0) and are still undefeated with one more non-district game to play.

Last game of the month, the Cougars will face Cumberland at their place. Kick-off is set for Thursday 12/14 at 5 pm.
